VILHELM LAURITZEN ARCHITECTS DESIGNS NEW OFFICE BUILDING FOR CARLSBERG CITY DISTRICT

2017-04-05

In 2018, the Carlsberg City District will receive a new office building, Harild Hus. Together with NORD Architects, Vilhelm Lauritzen will design the building, which will be situated at the corner of Ny Carlsberg Vej and Bohrs Gade. The new office building will be realised in collaboration with EKJ and BAM Danmark, which is the general contractor for the project.

A site-specific building
The building, which will comprise 6,815 m2 distributed across six storeys, constitutes the last wing and completion of the building block for the new European School. Just as the architecture of the European School references its surroundings, Harild Hus will be adapted to the district’s architecture and scale, with its own ”Carlsbergian” look – simultaneously industrial and ornamental.

- We have naturally looked towards the area’s original qualities and distinctive features in order to create a site-specific building that is adapted to its surroundings. The brick facade will be executed in a playful relief pattern with a regular rhythm and tight geometric divisions that reference the Storage Cellar and Hanging Gardens, explains Kathinka Bødtker-Næss Larsen, who is the project architect.

Prominent location
With its proximity to the Elephant Gate and with buildings such as the Machine Centre, the Winding Chimney and the Storage Cellar as its closest neighbours, Harild Hus will have a highly prominent location at the heart of the Carlsberg City District.

Harild Hus is named after Danish architect Carl Harild, who worked for Carlsberg and has designed several of the area’s buildings, including the delivery hall with a bottle warehouse, the mineral water factory, the power plant with a water tower and former obelisk as well as the boiler house.

Many possible uses
The project’s developer Carlberg Byen P/S is pleased with the forthcoming building and its many possible uses.

- I think that location, options and flexibility are the most apt words for this impressive building. It can accommodate small, medium-sized and large businesses alike, and with its flexible design and many layout possibilities, it can also house both creative enterprises and businesses with more requirements for divided office spaces. The building also has the possibility for retail leases right at the heart of the Carlsberg City District, surrounded by activity and listed buildings, says CEO of Carlsberg Byen, Jens Nyhus.

It is also BAM Danmark, Vilhelm Lauritzen Arkitekter, NORD Architects and EKJ that are responsible for the design and construction of the European School.
